STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITIES OF LOCAL CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS IN BOR

Approximately thirty representatives from fourteen Bor civil society organizations attended training workshops in December 2018 to strengthen their capacities and competencies in order for them to apply for grants of various funds.

Trainings, which are held owing to the donation from Rakita, are organized with the aim that workshop trainees, through lessons of lecturers from Smart Kolektiv, master Canvas business modeling, project presentation skills, strategic communication, social entrepreneurship, as well as fundraising of various funding facilities at which they can apply for grants.

Strong and proactive civil society organizations are needed for successful project realization, which will condition the development of the entire local community, and that this is one of the basic ideas for launching such a programme.

"GAMES WITHOUT VIOLENCE" AS A SOCIALIZING GAME

Commitment to supporting physical culture in primary schools and their safety are some of Rakita's priorities in contributing to the local community. This is why year 2018 was completed with the donation of the "Games without Violence" event, which included primary school students of town and village schools.

Eight students from four teams of schools "Stanoje Miljković" from Brestovac, "Petar Radovanović" from Zlot, and "3. Oktobar" and "Vuk Karadžić”, competed at the Sports Center Bor in late December 2018 in the games of skill.

The most interesting game for the numerous audience, which included many pre-schoolers, was the game on the polygon.

The first place in the overall results was taken by the school team of "3. Oktobar", the second place by students from primary school "Stanoje Miljković", while the third place was taken by young competitors from school "Vuk Karadžić".

The winners were rewarded with equipment which supports taking up sports. For the first three places, balls, cups, T-shirts and diplomas were awarded, while others received letters of thanks.

School "Vuk Karadžić" was the organizer of the games, along with the partnership of the Roma youth initiative "Gypsy Soul". The organization was financially supported by Rakita, while the "Sport for All" Association in Bor donated cups and T-shirts for the best teams.

THROUGH DONATION TO A GREATER SAFETY OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SLATINA

With the donation worth 2.6 million dinars, Rakita, on the basis of the initiative of the Local Community of Slatina and primary school "Vuk Karadžić", and through parent association "Bebironče", donated funds for setting up a quality fence around the school playground.

Apart from the fact that physical education classes in Slatina will be better, the playground will be available to all those who practice small sports.

RAKITA CONTINUES TO SUPPORT YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Bearing in mind the importance of presenting science to young people in an interesting and creative way, Rakita, like in the previous year, helped the realization of the "Timočki naučni tornado" Festival, which was held for the seventh time in Bor on November 3, 2018.

This year, in elementary school "3. Oktobar", the event was attended by 650 participants, among whom there were mostly students of elementary schools, which proves that this event has been recognized as an important segment of modern education.

This year's slogan of the festival reads "Scientific boom hits the mind" and presents interesting trips and experiments of 35 institutions, including Rakita.

At its stand, Rakita presented the children with a closer look at geology, and rewarded children's knowledge of this science with hundreds of pencil cases with a pen, which can be planted after use, after which a plant will grow out of the ground. The young ones did not hide their satisfaction with this unusual award aimed at promoting ecology.

In Rakita, they emphasize the regional significance of this traditional festival and welcome the organizer's initiative to bring science closer to young people in an extremely creative and interesting way. Rakita, as a socially responsible company, decided to support the "tornado" both financially and with its participation. The number of institutions and participants is growing at this festival year by year, which in itself shows that young people are interested in further education, and that such events and access to science are much needed.

This festival is intended primarily for children, but also for teachers and professors.

STUDENT EDUCATION ACTIVITY “SAFETY IN TRAFFIC”

On the occasion of the start of the new school year, at the initiative of Rakita in September 2018, a lecture on traffic safety for primary school students in the villages of Brestovac, Metovnica and Slatina was held. The initiative for education was driven partly due to the increased presence of passenger and freight vehicles, as well as machinery working on the construction of the exploration decline in the area.

The students had the opportunity to get to know the rules of traffic, and Rakita donated a safety reflective set containing bag, vest, two bracelets, a keychain and three stickers to each student.

The safety lecture was attended by 172 students from the three villages.

“MILLENNIALS WRITING – THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINING IN BOR”

The story of a retired Bor miner who spent his working age underground with details of his everyday work is just one of the stories implemented through the projects “Millennials Write – The Role of Youth in the Development of Mining in Bor” can be read at the website inforum.pisiglasno.com.

The project was implemented, with the financial support of Rakita, by students in the second grade of the Gymnasium in Bor for the youth information website “InForum”. The concept creator was the Association for the Development of the Municipality of Bor, and the goal was to contribute to marking the Day of Miners 2018, traditionally celebrated every 6th of August.

The editorial team of InForum was comprised of three students of the second grade of the Bor Gymnasium; Lenka Begović, Teodora Atanasovski and Jelena Trajković. The team made a connection between the development of the mining industry today and in the past, and the role of youth through this period.

Because of the increasing number of foreigners coming to Bor, all texts have been translated into English.

The second phase of the project , which was also supported by Rakita , was completed in September 2018. It consisted of education in the field of editing audio, video and photo content and public speaking.

JOINT ACTIVITIES TO RESOLVE THE STRAY DOG OVERPOPULATION ISSUE

Rakita Exploration and the “Borske šape” Citizens’ Association have signed an agreement in July 2018, whereby Rakita will provide a donation as support for a sterilization and castration project for stray dogs in Bor. This effort is expected to considerably reduce the number of stray dogs in a humane manner, and increase citizen safety.

Considering that the sterilization program is of key importance for reducing the number of stray dogs, “Borske šape” will use the donation to cover the costs of a veterinary station for sterilization and castration.

REPAIR OF REGIONAL ROADS IN SLATINA DAMAGED BY FLOODWATERS AND MACHINERY

Based on the agreement between Rakita and the representatives of Slatina Local Community, in July 2018, two kilometers of road tracks were rehabilitated in the area of this village.

To provide residents with easier and safer access to their properties, parts of the roads carried off by floodwaters were restored, along with roads damaged through the use of machinery, both by the residents and by Rakita.

Bulldozers were used to clear the roads, then overgrowth was removed and crushed gravel was added and packed. This work was completed to help the nearby residents of Slatina, and others who use these roads.

CLEANER RIVERS, HEALTHIER VILLAGES 2018

One hundred volunteers from Brestovac, Metovnica and Bor responded to the invitation to clean up the banks of the Brestovačka River at the end of June, 2018. The event titled “Cleaner Rivers, Healthier Villages” was organised by Rakita.

The event was carried out with the participation, support and cooperation of the Environmental Protection Office of Bor Municipality, local governments of neighbouring villages, the private company S-inženjering, civil society organisations and other associations.

To give their personal contribution to the project aimed at improving the state of the environment and drawing the attention of the responsible organisations and the wider public to the need and the right to live in a healthy environment, 25 employees of Rakita joined the event.

The removal of solid communal waste from an area covering two and a half kilometres started in Brestovac. It continued the following day with the clean-up of one and a half kilometres in Metovnica.

Over the course of two days, several tons of waste were collected and transported to the local landfill, and the river got its glow back. The volunteers said they were hoping that the clean-up was going to raise public awareness of environmental protection and that similar activities would not be necessary in future.

Rakita has organised the clean-up of the river banks for the second year in a row, and the results are evident. Unlike 2017, this year there was no need for a clean-up in Slatina. Instead, the plan is to give the village park a makeover.

Rakita’s clean-up event has received support and cooperation from the Councils of Brestovac and Metovnica and the following associations and clubs: the Association of Young Researchers Bor, Group 55, Village, Eco Legacy, Association Sports for All, Centre for Sports and Recreation, Wave, football club OFK Brestovac 1946, folk ensemble Đido from Brestovac and Parents’ Association Bebironče.

S-inženjering lent the machines without which the clean-up would not have been possible, while Rakita provided protective equipment for the volunteers, as well as tools, a meal and transport to the locations.

BOR MUNICIPALITY: EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE TO RAKITA FOR HELPING IN CLEARING OUT SNOW

The winter was characterized by huge amounts of snow during February and March 2018, as far as eastern Serbia was concerned, especially Bor. ONLINE SALE OF TRADITIONAL ARTICLES

At the initiative of Rakita, the project “Handicrafts”, aimed at economic empowerment of women in rural areas, was realized during year 2017 by stimulating entrepreneurship through the production of handmade high-quality items with the market placement of products. The project was realized in cooperation with the Associations “Handicrafts Arhaik” and “Association for Development of Municipality of Bor”.

Association “Handicrafts Arhaik” conducted trainings in the villages of Brestovac, Slatina and Metovnica from the end of August to November, 2017. First, a training was organized for women from Brestovac to master embroidery technique, followed by training for felting in Slatina, after which a training for weaving in Metovnica was held.

The first part of the project “Handicrafts” was completed on December 14, 2017, by awarding certificates to 24 women who successfully completed the trainings. As part of the ceremony organized thereupon, an exhibition of handicrafts made using the techniques of embroidery, felting and weaving was staged.

In the second part of the project, the agency “Connect Media” from Bor was selected to start working on the online sale of these articles that women were producing. Marija Mitrović and Ivana Jenić Komljenović are at the head of the online sales, and products can be found at the website www.etnokutak.com.

RAKITA HELPS BEEKEEPING DEVELOPMENT IN SLATINA

In cooperation with the Beekeeping Association “Slatina”, Rakita, within the Beekeeping Development Program in this village, organized a delivery of the material that will provide better conditions for a successful long-term bee pasture.

Representatives of our company delivered 85 liters of fuel, 300 kg of fertilizer to each beekeeper in Slatina, as well as 10 kg of phacelia seeds.

The main goal of this program is the sustainability of beekeeping as a branch of agriculture in this region. Bearing in mind that during the year the hoarfrost has greatly endangered the acacia bee pasture, this donation will precisely accelerate the conditions for yields in this area to be better.

According to the program plan, each beekeeper received, a year later, 20 seedlings of honey trees. In this way, Rakita has completed a support program for honey producers in order to achieve economic viability and more profitable dealings with this business.

The value of the complete Beekeeping Development Program in Slatina is around 600,000 dinars.

In addition to this program, Rakita, for two years in a row, provides for all beekeepers in Slatina and its surroundings donations in the form of expert lectures related to this field.

The Beekeeping Association in Slatina has around 100 members.

DONATION TO THE UROLOGY DEPARTMENT OF THE GENERAL HOSPITAL IN BOR

Successful cooperation between our company and the General Hospital in Bor has been continued in November 2017 through a donation of slings, which will be used for surgeries at the Urology Department.

This type of medical equipment will be of great benefit to women, because after the implantation of these slings, they will be able to normally perform urological functions. The donation is all the more important because patients with this problem have so far had to travel outside Bor to undergo surgery, but as of now, this kind of surgery will be performed routinely at the Urology Department in Bor too.

These slings haven’t so far been refunded by the Republic Health Insurance Fund, which means that each patient who underwent this kind of surgery had to pay the material on their own.

OCCUPANTS OF THE IT CENTER ALREADY DOING BUSINESS

After initiating the IT Entrepreneurship project, Rakita has directly contributed USD 12,000 to the realization of six types of training courses for 120 trainees who are unemployed and who possess certain knowledge of information technologies.

Future entrepreneurs were educated in graphic design, web marketing, web programming, IT entrepreneurship, IT legislation and IT administration.

Apart from contribution of Rakita into education of IT entrepreneurs, the Ministry of Trade, Telecommunications and Tourism financed the adaptation of the premises of the school "Branko Radičević" which became a modern coworking space that follows the world's IT trends. With the opening of the IT center and the education of future entrepreneurs who will be able to work and continuously improve in it, the project is fully rounded up.

Lidija Golubović, one of the participants of the training within the IT Entrepreneurship project financed by Rakita, registered a tourist agency on the basis of acquired knowledge in just a few months.

Web marketing training was also attended by Marija Mitrović, who has been interested in information technology for several years, but only after the opening of the IT center in Bor she succeeded in her intention. Now she is the owner of a marketing and consulting agency, and at the IT Center she is a tenant at a symbolic price and with an excellent team of associates from several areas.

An ideal place for work and advancement in the IT field was initiated by the Educational-Creative Center, and Rakita implemented this idea, appreciating the sustainability of the project and increasing employment in Bor.

The doors of the IT Center are open to its occupants seven days a week. The primary goal has been achieved, and that is the sustainability of the project. Because from now on, people who work at the center can perform their business and use the money they earn for the advancement of the IT space.

CLEANING AND LAND RESTRUCTURING INITIATIVE ALONG THE BRESTOVAČKA AND BORSKA RIVERS

In the middle of June 2017, the banks of Brestovačka and Borska Rivers in the villages of Brestovac, Slatina and Metovnica were packed with residents of these three villages, supported by Rakita employees, who gathered at the initiative of our company in order to clean and restructure the land along these river banks.

The size of the action can also be reflected in the participation of the Municipality of Bor, local NGOs, many private companies, as well as the local Public Utility Company “3. oktobar”. Removal of waste began in Brestovac and Metovnica by cleaning the Brestovačka River. More than 80 volunteers made their contribution that will remain visible in the years to come, as four kilometers of the river bed were cleared. A huge quantity of plastic waste was extracted from the river, on which occasion the opportunity was seized to arrange the wild bushes and vegetation on certain sections. A large number of Brestovac and Metovnica residents responded to the action, and the local private company “S Inženjering” gave their special contribution to the realization of the activities.

Equally successful was the action carried out in Slatina, along the river bed of the Borska River. Bearing in mind that the Borska River carries along industrial waters, which is why it is called “the dead river”, it is difficult to say that it became cleaner due to the action, however, plastic and other waste have been removed along its bed. Borska River was cleaned in a similar initiative in 2014, which resulted in raising the awareness of Slatina residents and their more responsible behavior towards the area.

During both of these initiatives, a total of 200 cubic meters of garbage was removed, and in order to increase environmental protection awareness, in places where individuals were once used to disposing of garbage, warning boards were placed so that no such behavior be exhibited in the future.

Such actions should also have an educational purpose, therefore, pupils of elementary schools in all three villages took part in a literary and art contest treating the subject of ecology. The best pieces were awarded encyclopedias and school supplies.

Rakita, considering our goal to preserve the identity, language and culture of local peoples, was happy to accept the call and support this multi-day event, which is one of the oldest events in the territory of Bor.

Slatina hosted the villages of Ražanj, Petrovac na Mlavi and Kučevo, as well as a folklore ensemble from Romania and the Cultural- Artistic Association Šarbanovac, who were the winners of the village meeting of 2018. The cultural-artistic society from Bor performed during the revue, and a football tournament was also organized.

The Dance Festival in Slatina, representing a non-material cultural asset, attracted about 200 participants, and prizes were handed out to the best.

The sponsor of the event was the City of Bor, and Rakita was one of the donors.

Rakita has supported several charity initiatives over the years. Historically, donations were aimed to support vulnerable groups that typically depend on the good will of people. In 2016, Rakita donated New Year’s gifts to the Mozaik Association for Disabled Children and Adults and to students of the Vidovdan School for Children with Special Needs.
